How to Prepare for Your First Photoshoot with Creative Direction
The Gumption Session includes creative direction, preparation shifts from simple readiness to thoughtful alignment with a clear concept. This is where we build a story together and create images that feel intentional and expressive. Here is how to prepare so our photoshoot runs smoothly and the final images are the best they can be.
Creative Direction
Send over a mood board with shots that inspire you and align with your vision. We can discuss whether you need a custom set, props, and surfaces. After we nail down the finer details we will prepare concept outline that will help your vision come to life. Shortly after that you will receive a shot list to review before our shoot, this will keep us organized during our photoshoot.
It’s important to review everything and make sure:
• The colour palette aligns with your brand
• The mood and energy feel right
• The props, wardrobe, or environment match your goals
If anything feels off, let me know. Creative shoots work best when everyone is clear and aligned before we begin.
Prepare All Items Listed in the Shot List
If we are shooting food, products, or ingredients, gather everything outlined in the shot list.
If we are shooting people or lifestyle images, prepare any clothing, tools, or accessories noted in the direction.
Organize everything the night before so thing are ready to go on the day of the shoot.
Style and Prep With Intention
Creative photoshoots often include visual storytelling, every detail matters.
This may include:
• Ironed clothing
• Clean dishware and glassware
• Pressed linens
• Fresh ingredients
• Props that support the colour palette and style
Our team ensures all of these details are taken care of as long as what you provide is good quality items to work with. If you have brand elements, textures, or materials that matter to your story, bring them. The more thoughtful the preparation, the stronger the final images.
Prepare Your Space or Location
If we are shooting in your space, please prepare it based on the concept outline and shot list.
This may include:
• Clearing surfaces
• Removing distracting items
• Setting aside items listed in the concept outline and shot list
• Ensuring there is space to move around and set up equipment
A clean, flexible environment helps us create polished images.
Communicate Any Changes Before the Shoot
If new products are launching, ingredients have changed, or you want to shift the story, please share these details ahead of time. Small updates can impact lighting, props, or the overall direction.
Arrive Ready to Collaborate
Creative direction is a collaborative process. Come with curiosity, ideas, and openness.
We will build the story together and shape it into images that feel true to your brand.
